The Wachau, a 36-kilometre stretch of the Danube valley between Melk and Krems, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Steep vineyard terraces, medieval villages, and the majestic Danube shape a landscape that has captivated travellers for centuries. Dürnstein, with its famous blue abbey church and the ruins high above the town, is the heart of this region.

Wine from the Wachau

The Wachau is one of Austria's most important wine-growing regions. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling thrive on the steep terraces above the Danube, developing their unmistakable character here. Numerous Heurige (wine taverns) and wineries invite you to taste.

Experience the Wachau

Cycling

The Danube Cycle Path runs right through Dürnstein and is one of Europe's most beautiful cycling routes. From Passau to Vienna, or simply the stretch between Melk and Krems — flat terrain, spectacular views. Bicycles can be rented directly in the village.

Hiking

The hiking trails through the vineyard terraces offer breathtaking views of the Danube valley. The climb to Dürnstein Castle, where Richard the Lionheart was once held captive, is a must. The Wachau World Heritage Trail connects the region's most beautiful spots.

River Cruises

DDSG and Brandner Schifffahrt offer regular trips on the Danube. Glide past castles, vineyard terraces, and medieval villages. The pier is just a few minutes' walk from our house.

Culture & History

Melk Abbey, the old town of Krems, the Krems Art Mile, and the numerous castles and ruins tell of over a thousand years of history. Dürnstein itself delights with its baroque abbey church and picturesque village centre.

Getting Here

How to Find Us

Dürnstein is located on the B3 between Krems and Melk, about 80 km west of Vienna. The drive from Vienna takes about 75 minutes, from Linz about 90 minutes. By train, you can reach Krems an der Donau, from where buses run regularly to Dürnstein.

From Vienna: A22/S5 towards Krems, then B3
From Linz: A1 towards Vienna, exit Melk
